$3.6 Million for fire departments across Upstate New York

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand proudly announced a significant federal funding of $3,638,904.22 for multiple fire departments across Upstate New York. This funding will be utilized to ensure the safety and preparedness of emergency personnel in 27 fire departments by providing them with protective gear, training, and essential supplies. The allocation of this critical federal funding was made possible through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, both administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Senator Schumer expressed his gratitude towards the brave firefighters who consistently put their lives on the line to safeguard our communities. He emphasized the importance of providing them with the necessary federal support to ensure their training, protective gear, and equipment needs are met, ultimately ensuring the safety of New Yorkers across the state. Earlier this year, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand took the lead in passing the Fire Grants and Safety Act of 2023 in the Senate. This legislation aims to reauthorize funding for the U.S. Fire Administration, AFG, and SAFER Grant Program until FY2030. Additionally, the bill extends the sunset for both SAFER and AFG from 2024 to 2032. The proposed legislation includes an increase in the authorization for the U.S. Fire Administration by approximately $20 million while maintaining the authorized funding level for SAFER and AFG at $750 million.

The AFG and SAFER grant programs, administered by FEMA, provide direct funding to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations. These grants enable the purchase of essential equipment and help increase the number of trained frontline firefighters available in communities. The grants are awarded based on a competitive evaluation process, prioritizing applicants that closely align with the program’s objectives and demonstrate financial need.
